I couldn’t afford to fall apart

by Aliantha

When my son was 6 months we found out he is autistic, and two days later I tested positive for pregnancy. After thinking of every possible outcome my decision was to do my best as a mother to give both my children a fair, equal start with the adequate mom they would need even if it meant for one of them, that mom was not me. So nine months later I birthed a beautiful baby girl who was immediately adopted by my eldest sister. My mom was my support person, the one who was to be there with me through my after adoption plan as it’s not an easy thing to do and as I still had my son, I couldn’t afford to fall apart. 3 weeks later, my mom died and 6 weeks after that one of my middle sisters who was pregnant died. 8 years later I am constantly flailing with my son who is full spectrum autistic and OCD with extreme physically aggressive tendencies. I cannot work and so am left to depend on the miniscule amount the government thinks is sufficient to supplement the income they say I cannot earn. I never even break even after bills and none of my needs are met, so to say I can physically, mentality or financially manage another kiddo would be insane as I cannot even put together the amount that Cobalt assisted with. Cobalt really is my saving grace right now! Because with the state of things in the government right now, I cannot even provide food for my household this month. I cannot imagine what I’d be going through without the support of Cobalt.

After the initial genetic test, it was discovered eventually that my baby tested positive for trisomy 21
