A Cobalt Project for Abortion Storytelling, Sharing and Support

Storytelling helps to shape our understanding of the abortion care landscape today and how it shifts over time.

Each abortion seeker’s story is unique and can expose the lived experience of some of the intersecting and complicated barriers that they face. Despite these barriers, stories can also reveal the resilience of those accessing abortion care and the kinds of meaningful support that surround them.

While no two stories are the same, we can find empathy, connection, support, and inspiration within them.

Storytelling is one of the most impactful ways we can combat misinformation about abortion access, help pass progressive abortion policy, and raise money for abortion access.

Submit Your Story

Your story is yours, and it is completely up to you to decide if you want to share it, what you want to share, and with whom. After you submit a story to us, we will be in contact with you to confirm your permission to share your story under the circumstances that feel best and safest for you.

By sharing your experience, you can provide support to others and reclaim the conversation around reproductive rights. Share your story here.

What to expect when sharing your story

Step 1: Submit Your Story Toggle Accordion

Submit your story using our online story submission form. In our form, we will ask for your preferred contact method and contact safety questions.

You get to choose how you want us to share your story, and if you want us to share it at all.

You get to choose if we can share your story with your first name only or share it anonymously with no name.

We ask for your contact information to verbally confirm that you are okay with us sharing your story in the ways you have selected.

Step 2: Confirm Permissions & Privacy Toggle Accordion

After submitting your story, a member from the Cobalt Abortion Fund or Cobalt Advocates team will reach out to you within 14 business days to confirm your permission to share it. We primarily reach out by texting or calling, but we take your safety seriously. Depending on the communication preferences you indicate on the story form, we will reach out by call, text, and/or email.

Once connected, we will confirm what name, if any, you are comfortable sharing with your story. We can share it with your first name only or share it anonymously with no name.

Then, we’ll go over the possible ways in which Cobalt Abortion Fund and Cobalt Advocates may use your story, and confirm your permission to share your story in the spaces and circumstances that feel most comfortable for you.

If we don’t hear back from you after reaching out three times, we will mark your story as not to be shared, and it will be removed from our database. Regardless of what name you choose to use, all of your identifying and contact information will be removed from our database within 6 months.

Step 3: Sharing Your Story Toggle Accordion

We will use your story as you wrote it, with your voice and language. We may make minor adjustments to account for grammar or use excerpts from your story rather than the whole thing. Other than that, we will not make any changes to your story. If you would like to review what you wrote before agreeing to share it, please let us know.

Sharing Your Story

What are some ways Cobalt and Cobalt Abortion Fund might share an abortion seeker’s story?

Fundraising

A story may be highlighted in a fundraising campaign through email or direct mail to show donors the real power and impact of the services Cobalt Abortion Fund provides to help raise money for funding other abortion seekers.

Stories really resonate with donors, and having the words of past abortion seekers used to fundraise more support for future abortion seekers creates a beautiful ecosystem of care.

Social Media

Stories are featured on our Instagram, Facebook, and/or Bluesky pages to uplift the experiences of abortion seekers and combat misinformation.

By sharing abortion stories, we show the complexity and wide range of experiences that people seeking abortion care have. We hope to increase understanding, empathy, and solidarity with abortion seekers.

News Media

Stories are sometimes shared by news publications to expand their reach and impact. If you elect to have your story shared with the news media, we will put you in contact with our Media Communications Director and a member of Cobalt Abortion Fund or Cobalt Advocates for an overview and media prep.

Depending on your boundaries, we will guide you to different media options.

Read more about what to expect when connecting with news media here.

Cobalt Abortion Fund and Cobalt Advocates Websites

If you elect to have your story shared on Cobalt Abortion Fund and Cobalt Advocates websites, they will be added to our collection of voices from other abortion seekers.

Reading stories from abortion seekers can provide comfort to other people needing support for their own abortion care. While everyone’s experience is unique, stories can be a powerful source of strength and solace. See the collection here.

Testimony to Support Abortion Access Policies

Sharing personal stories can make a meaningful difference in advancing abortion access. Your voice helps lawmakers understand what is at stake for real people as we work to protect and expand the right to abortion in Colorado.

If you choose to share your story, a member of Cobalt may include your testimony in conversations with lawmakers and advocates, or in hearings at the Colorado State Legislature.

If you prefer to share your story directly, please let us know. We are happy to help support and coordinate that process.

A note on public story sharing

Please note that while we do have the ability to remove your story from our websites and social media, once your story is shared with the public, we cannot guarantee that it and the name you chose to use have not been shared outside of Cobalt spaces.
